I love a classic beef burger. It’s hard to beat a 100% beef burgers freshly made and served with some tasty side like onion rings.
I’m going to start with the fries. Sweet potato fries make a great and healthy change from french fries. These will be oven baked not fried which is an easy way to cut back on the fat.
Peel you potato and then cut it into fries with a sharp knife. Having a really sharp knife helps as sweet potatoes tend to be harder to cut than regular potatoes.
Take a baking tray and dust the fries with salt and black pepper. Drizzle with olive oil. pre-heat your oven to 200 C or gas mark 6.
Bake the fries for 35-40 minutes or until golden.
Now onto the onion rings. Onion rings are absolutely one of my favorite snacks and they are really easy.
Take one medium onion and remove the paper outer layers then cut across into large disks. With a little pressure press out the rings. Push from the side which is the most narrow using and even pressure. The rings should just pop out.
You can use any onion but I love the slightly sweet flavor of red salad onion.
Now onto the batter.
I am going to use a simple batter which consists of 85 g of flour 200 ml of water and a pinch of salt. I also like to add a pinch of paprika and pepper but this is optional.
Heat a large pan of oil or deep fat fryer. You can test is the oil is hot enough but adding a little bit of the mixture. The batter should bubble and float to the top.
Now cover your onion rings in the batter and cook in batches. When cooked drain well and place on kitchen paper to absorb and excess oil.
For the burger.
Take a 1/4lb or fresh beef mince or about 110 grams I like to mince my own. Put it in a mixing bowl with some salt and pepper and mix well. In a burger press form the patties. If you do not have a burger press you can make them in the palm of your hand. The great thing about burgers is you can make them in advance and even freeze them for later.
Fry in a skillet on a high heat until cooked usually for about 5 minutes. alternately you can grill them for 10 – 15 minutes.
